History

Fargas is a chocolate shop located in the Old Town of Barcelona, ​​in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.
The first written news date from 1827. From then until today, Fargas continues with its own production of chocolates and a wide range of chocolate products in an artisanal way.

In 2018 we received the award for the oldest Chocolate Shop affiliated to the “Guild of Bakeries of Catalonia”.
Since its foundation, Fargas has been located on Carrer del Pi on the corner of Plaça Cucurulla. Today, we can still find some nameplates reminiscent of its original location

Due to urban changes, the store was forced to move in 2016 to a new location also in the same neoclassical building; the Palau Castell de Pons, but a few meters below. Although the corner and the old shop were irreplaceable, the new local has integrated the exterior carpentry, part of the furniture of the nineteenth century and above all, and as the main piece; the original mill still in use. The new shop combines the most emblematic furniture elements of Fargas with a contemporary and minimalist design where the smell and colors of chocolate remain the common thread of our history.

The activity of making chocolate has been maintained from generation to generation. There are currently about fifty varieties of chocolates. Truffles, Christmas nougats and Easter chocolate sculptures, continue to be craftsmanship confectioned in the workshop located in Galeries Maldà, also located at the same street.

Lovers of hot chocolate or chocolates can still enjoy one of the oldest recipes and methods of preparation in Europe. The old stone mill is currently used to make the traditional "Chocolate a la Piedra". The mill that was moved to the new store is still working and many people come to see it and are attracted by the smell of cocoa when the chocolate is being made.
